Supermarket giant Tesco has extended its Big Price Drop campaign with a fresh round of price cuts, in a move it claims will ease pressure on struggling consumers.
To start the new year, the chain has cut the cost of more than 350 products by an average of 15 per cent, including everyday essentials such as bread, meat and vegetables. Tesco says customers who buy a selection of 50 cut-price items could save as much as £8 altogether.
“As we look ahead to 2012 people across the country are saying they need more help with the cost of living,” said Tesco UK chief executive Richard Brasher. “With rising utility bills and soaring petrol prices, families are having to cut down on the staples, not just the extras, and seeing their incomes squeezed.”
Mr Brasher added that the price cuts will continue throughout 2012 and insisted Tesco remains committed to helping cash-strapped customers cope with the increasing cost of living.
Earlier this week, the Department of Health revealed it had joined forces with Asda, Aldi and Co-operative Food to cut the cost of a range of healthy ingredients as part of an effort to improve eating habits.
