John Lewis unveils virtual window displays

Blurry people shopping

Department store John Lewis has brought virtual window displays to seven of its high street stores.

The idea is to attract passing shoppers who can scan barcodes on the displays with their smartphones. They will then be directed to the item page on the store's website where they can complete the purchase.

The displays have been installed at the company's stores in Sloane Square, Oxford Street, Brent Cross, Edinburgh, Reading, Liverpool and Milton Keynes. The company, which recently launched a dedicated iPhone app, hopes the displays will increase the success of its post-Christmas clearance sale.

Simon Russell, head of multi-channel at John Lewis, said: "The window displays form part of our co-ordinated multi-channel approach which includes the roll-out of free WiFi to our shops, the launch of our iPhone app and the extension of Click and Collect which is now available from 129 John Lewis and Waitrose shops."
