£1m a minute spent on Frantic Friday

One pound coins

Labelled the busiest shopping day of the year, an estimated £1m will be spent every minute by shoppers in Scotland today.

According to a report by the Scotsman newspaper, retailers are hoping that the millions of pounds due to be handed over by frantic consumers trying to complete their Christmas shopping will go some way towards boosting the profits of shops suffering from the effects of the recession.

Susan Nicol, the regional director of St Enoch shopping centre in Glasgow, told the newspaper that despite there only being a few hours left to buy presents, some people were still holding out for last-minute price reductions.

She said: "People now want to know what they are buying is of good quality. People are living up to the term ‘canny Scot’. They are looking for bargains.

"They are hanging off and waiting to see if prices are going to come down. I even heard a woman asking a store assistant to assure her that there was not going to be a sale in three days' time before she bought an item."
