Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has signed a new agreement with telecoms provider BT which will see faster broadband introduced at its stores.
In a statement issued last week, Sainsbury’s revealed that the next generation of BT broadband will be installed at each of the retailer’s 1,000 outlets and 23 depots by the end of 2012. The new service will have four times more capacity than at present, allowing more data to be shared in real time.
“This deal with BT is a significant step for Sainsbury’s as we continue to invest to support our growth plans. This investment will enhance the productivity of our colleagues in store and allow an even greater focus on serving customers,” said Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King.
BT CEO Ian Livingston added that the communications giant was “very proud” to have been chosen by Sainsbury’s, citing the decision as vindication of BT’s track record in delivering high-profile telecoms systems.
Earlier in the month, rival Tesco rolled out a free Wi-Fi service at its Tesco Extra stores, granting Clubcard members unlimited access to the wireless internet.
