Supermarket chain Morrisons has announced plans to create thousands of new jobs, with more new outlets expected to open in 2012.
The retailer announced this week that it is to open 25 new shops next year, generating an estimated 7,000 jobs. Morrisons also plans to expand its logistics and manufacturing divisions, with around 300 positions expected to be up for grabs at the new Bridgwater Regional Distribution Centre in Somerset.
“Despite the difficult economic conditions, Morrisons continues to have ambitious growth plans and that means we will be searching for people to join us in the communities in which we operate,” said group human resources director Norman Pickavance. “At a time when the number of young and long-term unemployed continues to increase, we will provide opportunities for many people.”
Mr Pickavance added that Morrisons will aim to help its newcomers embark on long-term careers in retailing, providing opportunities to graduate from shop-floor work to roles in management.
The announcement came after a survey conducted by the company suggested many families may save money this Christmas by cutting back on certain festive foods, including Christmas pudding and sprouts.
