John Lewis enjoys Mega Monday boost

Online shopping Christmas

New figures have revealed that retailer John Lewis enjoyed its most successful Mega Monday ever on December 5, setting a new record for single-day demand.

The group revealed in a trading update issued yesterday that orders were up by 30 per cent on last year’s Mega Monday, surging to a total of £5.27m. Its website also hosted record traffic during the week to December 3, while sales in the four days ending on December 7 were 3.7 per cent higher year-on-year.

“Shoppers are treating themselves as well as each other this week with party preparation products flying off the shelves,” said director of selling operations David Barford. “Quirky gifts and stocking fillers have also been popular while Christmas trees have had another stellar week as people decorate their homes.”

Sales of the chain’s 8ft Fireside Christmas tree climbed by 43.5 per cent on the previous week, with the Glitter tree shifting 48 per cent more units. Sales of nail varnish, meanwhile, were 67 per cent higher than at the same point in 2010.

Earlier this week, the British Retail Consortium claimed the ongoing price war between leading retailers had helped ease some of the pressure on cash-strapped consumers.
