Tesco launches Wi-Fi service

Man using phone in supermarket

Supermarket giant Tesco has rolled out a free Wi-Fi at its Tesco Extra stores, allowing customers to browse product ranges and reviews whilst on the move.

Members of the chain’s Clubcard loyalty scheme will have free and unlimited access to the wireless internet, as long as they register using their individual Clubcard number. Other customers will be able to use the service for 15 minutes every 24 hours free of charge.

“We’re proud to be the first UK Supermarket to offer nationwide access to free Wi-Fi. People are increasingly using a variety of digital services and we’re excited by our customers’ reaction to the new service,” said Tesco’s chief information officer Mike McNamara.

The roll-out of the service follows a recent trial, after which 82 per cent of participants said they would definitely use it again and all found it simple to use. The survey also found that 71 per cent of customers who used Wi-Fi at Tesco shops did so using smartphone handsets.

Last week, Tesco announced plans to offer free digital film downloads with purchases of 30 DVD titles.
