Supermarket chain Asda is set to invest millions of pounds on rewards for its employees as a festive bonus to thank them for their endeavours over the last year.
The company intends to distribute packages containing £5 towards a Christmas party, a £20 Asda gift voucher and a free festive meal to staff at a total cost of £17m. Asda people director Hayley Tatum acknowledged that many workers are struggling to cope with everyday expenses and said the firm hopes these seasonal extras will provide a helping hand.
“At a time when we are all having to tighten our belts to cope with the increasing cost of living, we’re proud to help by giving a proper thank you to our colleagues for their efforts,” she explained. “Our in-store and depot colleagues are without doubt the heroes of our business.”
Asda employees have enjoyed perks totalling more than £90m so far this year, with £49m paid out when a three-year Walmart Sharesave scheme matured in June and an additional £26.9m coming after better-than-expected sales figures back in February.
