Consumers making fewer shopping trips, survey finds

Busy indoor shopping centre

A new report has indicated that Britain’s consumers are making fewer trips to the shops, but spending more when they do venture out on to the high street.

According to the latest National Survey of Local Shopping Patterns (NSLSP) from commercial property firm CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), shoppers are also increasingly making longer journeys to out-of-town retail parks as opposed to spending their hard-earned cash in local outlets.

The report also singled out improved access to stores, improved parking provision and big brands are among the major factors continuing to draw consumers to shopping destinations across the UK. The NSLSP compiled data relating to various retail sector trends covering more than 12,000 individual centres.

“These findings signal positive news for Yorkshire where there is a multitude of retail development both currently underway and in the pipeline,” CBRE associate director of retail agency James Fox told the Yorkshire Post. “In Wakefield, Trinity Walk has let more than 90 per cent of its 50 new retail units and Westfield Bradford has already secured pre-lets.”

Earlier in the week, Land Securities revealed that 54 per cent of units at its new Trinity Leeds development had already been pre-let ahead of the centre’s scheduled opening in February 2013.
