Shopping centre plans unveiled

Crane

A planned shopping centre in Northamptonshire could create scores of new jobs and attract millions of pounds’ worth of investment to the area, it has been claimed.

According to the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, the Rushden Lakes development is earmarked for a site at Skew Bridge, close to the A45. The centre, which will cost an estimated £50m to build, is also expected to house big-name retail chains including Marks & Spencer.

“We have agreed terms with Marks & Spencer to take a large unit, with food, fashion and home offers. We are also talking to other leading UK retailers as we will have about 20 retail units,” said Tim Walton, chief executive of developer LXB Retail Properties.

The centre will also feature “high-end” restaurants, a hotel, a leisure centre and a lake marina. Mr Walton added that LXB had also been working closely with Natural England to ensure that nesting birds from a neighbouring site of special scientific interest were protected.

This week, Capital Shopping Centres – which owns sites including Lakeside, the Trafford Centre and the MetroCentre – revealed in a trading statement that its sites had performed strongly in the third quarter of the year.
