Footballer David Beckham is set to become the new face of Sainsbury’s, after being recruited by the supermarket chain to front its new Active Kids campaign.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, who currently plies his trade at Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy, will also promote Sainsbury’s sponsorship of next year’s Paralympic Games. The first advert featuring Beckham will be shown in cinemas from November 25.
“I know the difference leading a healthier and more active life can make to kids,” Beckham said. “I am looking forward to working with Sainsbury's to help UK kids have fun, become even more active and introduce them to Paralympic sports through the 1 Million Kids Challenge.”
Beckham will work alongside fellow Active Kids ambassador Ellie Simmonds, who won two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. Sainsbury’s says it has so far donated sports equipment worth more than £115m to sports clubs and schools across the UK.
Last month, celebrity chef and long-term Sainsbury’s brand ambassador Jamie Oliver announced plans to step down from his role after an 11-year partnership with the retailer.
