Shoppers ‘want more discount stores’

A new survey has suggested that consumers would be happy to shop at discount stores, with budget chains having become increasingly popular over the last few years.

The Yorkshire Post reports that a poll conducted by industry research group IGD found 64 per cent of shoppers aged between 18 and 35 and 62 per cent of those with teenage children said they would have no problem with shopping at a discount supermarket if there was one sited locally.

The study also found that 43 per cent of people living in northern England had visited a discounter at least once in the last month, as opposed to 24 per cent of Londoners and 35 per cent of those living elsewhere in the south.

“Shoppers are now using a range of techniques as they hunt for value. They are now prepared to sacrifice more time and put in more effort in order to maintain their food quality for the best price,” said IGD head of shopper insight Ben Miller. “Household incomes are being squeezed on several fronts.”

Earlier this month, Tesco revealed it had seen an extra one million transactions per week at its outlets since the launch of its Big Price Drop campaign.
