Councillors in Harrogate have voted in favour of plans for a Tesco superstore to be built in the Yorkshire town, which is currently the last postcode in mainland Britain without one.
In a meeting yesterday (September 6th), Harrogate Borough Council’s planning committee opted to support the scheme by a margin of 11 members to three. A 24-hour supermarket will occupy the site of a former gasworks at New Park.
“It is extremely important for us, it is a great site and we have worked hard to get here,” Tesco corporate affairs manager Matt Magee told the Yorkshire Post. “We are not represented in Harrogate with a major supermarket and we feel there is an opportunity there.”
Geoff Webber, a member of North Yorkshire County Council representing the New Park district, also backed the decision and claimed the development would provide much-needed jobs for the local community.
Earlier in the week, Tesco submitted proposals for another new supermarket to Wakefield City Council, with the local authority expected to make a decision following a consultation period with local residents and businesses.
