UK supermarket Sainsbury's has announced that it is to trial the use of shopping trolleys with built-in iPad docks.
According to The Telegraph newspaper, the aim is to allow shoppers to multi-task while shopping and catch up with the latest news and sport online through their handheld tablet computer. The trolleys have been developed in conjunction with Sky. The company is looking to promote its Sky Go service which allows people to watch sport and news through their iPad while on the move.
To start with the specially designed trolleys will only be available at the company's Cromwell Road store in Kensington, London, but if successful the idea could be rolled out across other sites.
Trolley designer Ian Burgess of Setwo Designs said: "Being able to create a gadget that is practical yet innovative is often a challenge but I think with the trolley we’ve cracked it. The trolley can be used in the traditional way for shopping yet streams the latest sports news easily."
