Weekly sales up at John Lewis

Sales increase retail
Retailer John Lewis has said that its weekly sales have increased, driven chiefly by its stores in London, Glasgow and Solihull – though other outlets are also doing well.

For the week ending 20 August, the co-operative department store chain achieved a year-on-year rise of 2.6 per cent, partially thanks to its London Oxford Street branch showing a 5.2 per cent increase. Glasgow and Solihull were up 4.7 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively.

John Lewis's internet sales also did well, with growth of 33 per cent; boosted by strong multi-channel sales including the retailer's Click & Collect service, which enables consumers to buy online and pick up goods at their nearest store.

Electricals and home technology departments enjoyed particularly good results, up 8 per cent compared to the same week a year ago.

Year-on-year fashion sales were also higher, by 4 per cent, though home sales were down 2 per cent.

John Lewis head of corporate sales Simon Williams said: "Although it sometimes seems there is uncertainty everywhere from the weather to the global financial markets, what is constant is the determination of partners across the business to give great service and secure every possible sale.

"The result for week three of the second half again reflects that determination."
