Supermarket giant Tesco has said that a "technical error" was to blame after hundreds of products were found to have been priced more cheaply in Scotland than in other parts of the UK.
According to a report by The Telegraph, the company was stocking a range of 800 items which were priced 5 per cent lower in Scotland, contravening the firm's national pricing policy. Although geographical pricing is not allowed, the supermarket can charge higher prices based on the format of a store; for example, with higher prices in small high street shops compared with out-of-town superstores.
Campaigners have voiced concerns that there is a growing divide between England and Scotland, but Tesco has blamed the pricing issue on a glitch.
A Tesco spokesman said: "A relatively small number of products at our Scottish stores were incorrectly priced by a small amount.
"This was caused by a technical error as our Scottish stores are being moved to a new pricing software system. The error has now been corrected."
