Sales at clothing retailer ASOS shot up by 69 per cent year-on-year during the first quarter of its financial year, the company has announced.

In an interim trading statement released to the London Stock Exchange this morning, the firm said retail sales across the group hit £104.2m in the three months to June 30, up from £61.7m during the same period in 2010.

International sales were the driver for most of the growth, with takings in the US up by 151 per cent, rising by 80 per cent in Europe and posting a jump of 353 per cent elsewhere in the world.

ASOS' fashion products are aimed at 16 to 34-year-olds. It sells about 50,000 branded and own label items, and claims to introduce in the region of 1,500 new product lines each week, promoted both in-store through window displays and online.

Chief executive Nick Robertson said: "The new financial year has started well and we remain positive in our outlook for 2012, with progress to date in line with expectations."

ASOS said that during the last quarter it had completed the transition to a new single warehouse facility in Barnsley, on time and ahead of schedule.
