Jobs are still being created in the UK retail sector despite many businesses suffering in the current climate.
Kevin Green, chief executive of lobbying organisation the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), believes there are opportunities out there even though some companies have signalled job losses.
Mr Green said the feedback from recruitment professionals was that many employers are still hiring. In addition, he said the current environment means many retail sector workers now have transferable skills such as experience dealing with suppliers and in communications. These skills are highly prized by a number of employers.
Mr Green said: "In an increasingly service-driven economy, these are some of the skills employers are crying out for. It is important to recognise that hiring intentions among employers remain very upbeat.
"According to the latest Report on Jobs (compiled by REC and KPMG), there is still a real demand for employees in the IT and computing and engineering and construction sectors. We still anticipate overall employment growing in the UK even while the public sector is reducing the amount of people who work within it."
