Clothing retailer Marks & Spencer has joined high street rivals in bringing forward its 2011 summer sale.

According to a report by the Evening Standard, the company said the decision to begin its seasonal promotions two weeks earlier than last year was "in line with the market" and what customers want.

Discounts are being offered in-store and online, across ranges including women's, men's and children's clothing, lingerie, homewear and technology.

Retailers including Debenhams and John Lewis began their summer sales around two weeks ago and more major high street names are sure to follow. Businesses of all sizes across the UK are making use of visible poster frames to highlight discounted items, and some are introducing longer opening hours to attract more customers.

Marks & Spencer is due to release details of its first quarter results in two weeks time. Analysts have said they expect the company to have performed on a par with its rivals.
