Annual music festival Glastonbury throws open its gates today (22 June) for this year's extravaganza – and retailers are looking forward to the music sales jump that often follows it.
The festival often inspires consumers to invest more in general music culture and alternative lifestyle products, which is great news for many small businesses.
However, the main increase is usually observed in record sales, as a result of the huge rise in profile enjoyed by bands who perform at the festival and consequently appear in radio and television coverage.
Phil Barton of London indie store Sister Ray told Music Week's James Wilmore: "There’s always a surprise, every year. Seasick Steve is a good example.
"As an independent, we always look at [acts] further down the bill. If people get to see a band like Tame Impala on TV, I think that will make a big difference. Acts like Metronomy and Yuck should do well too, if they get good TV coverage."
It is always advisable for retailers to take note of popular trends and events that may help their business.
