A report has claimed that the ugliness of some shops in the Cumbrian town of Millom is contributing to problems with its tourism trade.
Unattractive and unhelpful signs are among the main elements that may discourage visitors, along with closed toilets and empty units, according to shop expert Bill Smith.
Mr Smith visited Millom in May and has now told the North West Evening Mail that 'generally poor shop frontages and absence of retail activity' were among the factors which 'detract from developing a positive image of the town, which will impact negatively on visitor perception'.
Other signage problems include missing road signs, a damaged bus shelter and even an incomplete sign welcoming tourists to the village.
These issues confirm the importance of visual markers to appeal to people and help them to decide where and how to shop.
