Advertising training crucial, says FSB

Research carried out by the Federation for Small Businesses (FSB) has found that small to medium-sized enterprises in Britain see sales and marketing training as critical to helping ensure future growth.

The organisation's Voice of Small Business survey spoke to 1,700 small firms and found that 46 per cent consider self-promotion a key part of being able to succeed in new markets.

Marketing training can cover anything from the use of display supports in-store, to the use of social media online. Whatever the method, being able to successfully advertise services and products is seen as crucial by a large number of Britain's small businesses.

John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said private businesses on the UK's high streets are helping to pick up the shortfall in employment from the public sector. He called on the government to step in.

"For small firms to grow, they need to train staff in the skills that will impact on their bottom line," said Mr Walker. "The Government has to step up and support small firms in leading the economy back into steady growth."
